LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech head men’s basketball coach Grant McCasland announced Wednesday the addition of transfer guard Donovan Atwell, a sharpshooter from UNC Greensboro, to the Red Raiders' 2025-26 roster.
Atwell, a 6-foot-5 guard from Huntersville, North Carolina, will join the Red Raiders with one year of eligibility remaining after spending the last three seasons with the Spartans. He has appeared in 95 career games, compiling 907 points, 215 made 3-pointers (39.4%), 225 rebounds, 56 assists and 53 steals.
A two-year starter at UNCG, Atwell is coming off a junior season in which he averaged 13.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.0 3-pointers per game while shooting 39.8% from beyond the arc (96-of-241). His 96 made 3-pointers ranked third in the Southern Conference and 43rd nationally, while his 3.0 3-pointers per game ranked 34th in Division I.
He scored in double figures 22 times during the 2024-25 season and had four games with 20 or more points, including a season-high 28 points against Chattanooga. In that contest, Atwell went 6-for-7 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line.
For his career, Atwell is 215-for-545 from 3-point range and has averaged 9.5 points per game. He has posted double-digit scoring averages in each of the past two seasons, including 11.4 points per game as a sophomore while hitting 42.3% from 3-point range (93-for-220).
Atwell becomes the third transfer to sign with Texas Tech this offseason, joining Tyeree Bryan (Santa Clara) and LeJuan Watts (Washington State). The Red Raiders are coming off a 28-9 season, which included a 15-5 mark in Big 12 play and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. Texas Tech has gone 51-20 over the past two seasons under McCasland with consecutive national tournament berths.
