LUBBOCK, TX — A late-night bar check near Logie’s on Overton led to two arrests Thursday after police witnessed a car drive over a curb, triggering a foot chase, two taser deployments, and the recovery of ecstasy and a firearm.
According to court documents, Lubbock Police officers were stationed outside Logie’s on May 1 at around 2:00 a.m. to monitor crowd dispersal and traffic when they shortly witnessed a vehicle, driven by Matthew Simpson, 23, attempt to leave the parking lot, drive over a curb, and get stuck. Police say he tried to accelerate, but the vehicle would not budge.
Concerned the driver might be intoxicated, officers approached the passenger side of the car and started talking to Simpson and his passenger, Javondrick Washington, 29. As Simpson attempted to accelerate to get unstuck, officers asked Simpson to put the vehicle in park. Instead, police say Washington rolled up the window, shifted the car into drive, and told Simpson to drive off.
When Washington refused to roll the window back down after being asked multiple times, an officer broke the passenger window with his baton. Officers told Washington to exit the vehicle, and while he did, he fled.
Washington ran through the parking lot, and an officer deployed a taser, causing him to fall. He quickly got back up and ran again before being tased a second time. Despite being told multiple times to stop resisting, the officer got on top of Washington and told him to place his hands behind his back.
Court documents state Washington then used bodily force to prevent the officer from taking him into custody. The officer wrestled Washington on the ground and gave multiple commands to quit resisting, but Washington would not give up. The officer stayed on top of Washington until backup arrived.
When backup arrived to help, they were able to eventually force Washington’s hands behind his back and take him into custody.
During the arrest, officers initiated a probable cause search and spotted two round pills near the vehicle’s center console. The pills later tested positive for ecstasy.
The search also turned up a handgun under the passenger seat, within reach of where Washington had been sitting. Police noted that Washington is a documented member of the “Crips” street gang.
Washington was arrested and booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center for Possession of a Controlled Substance <1 G, Evading Arrest, Resisting Arrest, and Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon. His total bond was set at $16,000.
Simpson was also arrested and charged with No Liability Insurance, Expired Vehicle Registration, Violating a Promise to Appear in Court, and Possession of a Controlled Substance < 1 G. As of May 2, he has been released on bail.
Court documents or the Lubbock County Jail Roster charges do not state that Simpson was arrested for DWI.
