LFR Responds to Fire at Former Wright Elementary School Gym

LUBBOCK, TX — Lubbock Fire Rescue responded to a fire at the former Wright Elementary School early Saturday morning, May 24, after receiving a 911 notification from an alarm company just after 4 a.m.

According to a press release from LFR, a response unit arrived at the 1300 block of Adrian Street to find smoke from the eaves of a standalone gymnasium at the elementary school. A “Structure Response” was requested, and three engines, one truck, and two Battalion Chiefs later arrived.

Firefighters forced entry into the gymnasium and were met with heavy smoke and active flames. LFR stated the fire was fueled by a liquid substance, and firefighters reported hearing popping noises and small explosions as flames spread behind them.

Due to the dangerous conditions and the need for backup, crews held their position until a water supply was secured and additional personnel arrived.

Once backup arrived, firefighters pushed deeper into the gym and located the source of the fire. LFR says several pallets of hand sanitizer and books stored inside the building were fueling the fire. Using foam, firefighters extinguished the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Lubbock Fire Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office.
