IRVING, TX — The Big 12 Conference has issued fines and public reprimands to Texas Tech University and the University of Kansas following Saturday’s football game, citing violations of the league’s sportsmanship standards.
Both schools were fined $25,000, the conference announced Monday. Texas Tech was penalized for repeated instances of fans throwing objects onto the playing field, while Kansas was fined for “disparaging comments” about the conference and another member institution, as well as an inaccurate statement made by head coach Lance Leipold regarding a pocketknife incident.
"After a formal review, Texas Tech did not take sufficient steps to prevent and deter the repeated throwing of objects onto the field and team bench areas," said Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark. "Coach Leipold's comments questioned the integrity and professionalism of both the Conference and a member institution. Both actions warranted a financial penalty. The Big 12 Conference prioritizes integrity and will have no further comment on the matter."
