LUBBOCK, TX — It was a clash of Big 12 Titans on Saturday, November 8, when the No. 9 Texas Tech Red Raiders hosted the No. 8 BYU Cougars. Texas Tech also hosted ESPN's College Game Day before kickoff, the first time in 17 years. This game came as advertised, with the Red Raiders playing solid defense and slowly building a lead. Texas Tech leads 13-0 at the half.
1st Quarter
Texas Tech's defense forced a punt after the opening kickoff. The Red Raiders capitalized on offense to kick a Stone Harrington 50-yard field goal to take the lead early in the 1st quarter. Another forced punt by Texas Tech allowed the offense to score the game's first touchdown. The Red Raiders drove down the field to set up a 9-yard touchdown pass from Behren Morton to Caleb Douglas. Tech led 10-0 with 19 seconds left in the 1st quarter.
2nd Quarter
Texas Tech continued to play well on defense for the rest of the first half. The Red Raiders' defense set up another Harrington field goal, this time from 27 yards out, to give Texas Tech a 13-0 lead. Tech had one final opportunity to score before the half. After Morton hit Reggie Virgil on a 39-yard pass to push Texas Tech inside BYU's 10-yard line, the Red Raiders would fail to score. Head Coach McGuire rolled the dice and went for it on 4th down. Morton hit Terrance Carter Jr. in the end zone, but solid defense from the Cougars broke up the pass. Texas Tech headed to the locker room with a 13-point lead.
3rd Quarter
The stingy defense from both sides continued as both teams traded punts to start the second half. Harrington added another field goal for Tech before the Red Raiders' defense finally forced a takeaway. Pressure from David Bailey and Romello Height forced an errant throw that Jacob Rodriguez snagged out of the air. The takeaway led to another field goal, and the Red Raiders led 19-0 headed to the 4th quarter.
4th Quarter
A big play from Cam Dickey on a 3rd and long set up Texas Tech's first touchdown since the first quarter. Dickey sprinted to the outside, broke a tackle, and continued for a 33-yard gain to BYU's 48. A few plays later, the young man caught a pass from Morton to push the ball into the red zone. He was rewarded for his efforts a bit later when he walked into the end zone on a 1-yard score. Tech led 26-0 with 10:46 to play in the 4th quarter.
The Cougars finally found some rhythm down four scores in the 4th quarter. BYU marched down the field on several solid pass plays from Bear Bachmeier to at least give the Cougars a chance not to get shut out. Texas Tech led 26-7 with 7:35 to play in the 4th.

Texas Tech added another field goal later to put an exclamation point on a dominant win over a Top-10 team. The Red Raiders forced a turnover on downs before Morton came out in victory formation to kneel out the remaining time on the clock.
The Red Raiders dominated BYU 29-7.
Next up, Texas Tech returns to action on Saturday, November 15, when the Red Raiders host UCF.
