Buddy Holly Center Announces Lonesome Dove Traveling Exhibition

LUBBOCK, TX — A traveling exhibition inspired by Lonesome Dove, the celebrated Western novel by Larry McMurtry, will be on display at the Buddy Holly Center from Jan. 23 through March 22, 2026.

The exhibition features photographs taken during the filming of the acclaimed 1989 CBS miniseries adaptation of Lonesome Dove by Bill Wittliff, who also served as an executive producer of the series. The images go beyond traditional production stills, capturing the sweeping landscapes and visual storytelling that helped define the epic Western drama.

Based on McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Lonesome Dove tells the story of two aging Texas Rangers who drive a cattle herd more than 2,500 miles from the Rio Grande to Montana in an effort to establish the region’s first ranch. The novel and its television adaptation continue to resonate with audiences decades after their release.

The traveling exhibition is produced by The Wittliff Collections at Texas State University and is presented in partnership with Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
