LUBBOCK, TX — A bus crash that injured two coaches, a player, and the bus driver from Abilene Christian University was reportedly caused by a drunk teen driver.
According to the Lubbock Police Department (LPD), officers were directing traffic at the intersection of University Avenue and 4th Street, near the Marsha Sharp Freeway, when the incident occurred. The bus, part of a caravan departing the Texas Tech campus and heading back to Abilene, was turning onto University Avenue from Tech.
As one of the Abilene Christian University (ACU) buses moved through the intersection, 19-year-old Parker Young, driving southbound on University Avenue, allegedly disregarded police traffic directions. He proceeded through the intersection, colliding with the ACU bus. The impact caused the bus to crash into another vehicle that was also attempting to turn north onto University Avenue.
The collision occurred at 11:33 p.m. on Saturday, following Abilene Christian University's narrow overtime defeat to the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Young was arrested at the scene for Driving While Intoxicated and is currently being held in the Lubbock County Jail. As of noon on Sunday, no bond had been set, according to court documents.
