Chemical Leak After Semi Crashes into Train

LUBBOCK, TX  A semi-truck crashed into a train and caused a chemical leak on East 40th Street, between Ivory and Locust, on Thursday morning.

Lubbock Fire Rescue responded to a Level 3 Hazmat response at around 10:45 a.m. after a semi-truck crashed into a train, causing a chemical leak from the truck. The chemical was later found to be malathion, a pesticide that can cause various symptoms if inhaled.

The leak occured when one of the totes carrying the pesticide got punctured in the crash. The tote held about 250 gallons of malathion, and roughly 10 gallons leaked out, says LFR.

Fire crews are working to stop the leak and safely offload the remaining totes from the semi’s trailer. The train has already been moved, and LFR is working with a Heavy Rescue team to help stabilize the trailer during the process.

Authorities ask people to stay away from the area while emergency workers handle the situation.
