LUBBOCK, TX — A four-vehicle crash early Thursday morning on US Highway 84 near Southeast Drive left two men dead and one person injured, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The crash occurred at approximately 5:18 a.m. on May 22, about 0.29 miles east of Southeast Drive on US Highway 84.
Preliminary investigation shows that a 1996 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, driven by Jerry Crisp, 59, of Lubbock, was traveling eastbound when it left the roadway, hit a cable barrier in the median, and stopped in the westbound lanes. Crisp was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 2016 Chevrolet SUV driven westbound by Jodi Gatewood, 49, of Slaton, crashed with Crisp’s motorcycle. After the crash, the SUV skidded and left the roadway, stopping near a railroad track.
A westbound train later crashed into the SUV, but caused no injuries.
A second motorcycle, a 2016 Harley-Davidson driven by Christopher Lucero, 37, of Hale Center, returned to the scene and entered the roadway from the shoulder when it was hit by a 2020 Chevrolet pickup driven by Christopher Banzet, 51, of Slaton.
Lucero was transported to University Medical Center-Lubbock but later died from his injuries. Banzet sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
No other injuries were reported.
According to DPS, the weather was clear and road conditions were dry at the time of the incident. The posted speed limit in the area is 75 mph.
The investigation remains ongoing.
