LUBBOCK, TX—Last month, the Lubbock Police Department launched the "Operation Road Risk Reduction Initiative" to address problematic motorists in high-accident and congested areas. This operation focused on targeted traffic enforcement at different locations throughout Lubbock. LPD released the data for our readers to analyze.
In a September notice, the Lubbock Police Department reported responding to 3,799 collisions in the past year, with 1,404 resulting in injuries—a 10% decrease compared to last year.
We previously reported on traffic enforcement efforts on October 3 and 4, during which only 88 traffic stops were recorded. Below is a chart showing the traffic stops from the second round of Operation Road Risk Reduction, detailing the number of warnings and tickets issued:
S. Loop 289 | Slide Road | Day Total | Ticket | Warning | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
October 17 | 14 | 6 | 20 | 14 | 6 |
October 18 | 11 | 16 | 27 | 5 | 21 |
ZONE TOTAL | 25 | 22 | 47 | 19 | 27 |
During the second round of enforcement, the police conducted only a total of 47 traffic stops, nearly half the number from the first round. The number of tickets and warnings is also significantly lower than the data from the last round of operations. While these figures may seem low, they represent a small fraction of the 262,099 registered vehicles in Lubbock in 2023. It's important to note that not all vehicles are on the road simultaneously or causing issues.
The stops were concentrated in areas deemed problem intersections and roadways based on factors such as speed limits, rush hour congestion, and reported crashes.
Based on the data from both rounds of the operation, there has been a significant drop in the number of motorists ticketed and warned. The South Loop area encompasses significant intersections such as Slide Road, Quaker Avenue, Indiana Avenue, and University Avenue.
Despite grouping the data, the number of traffic violations remains very low. Does this mean people were aware of authorities out on the road a second time, or are Lubbock motorists driving safer?
