Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day honors U.S. military personnel who died in the line of duty. The tradition dates back to the Civil War and serves as a solemn day of remembrance, rather than celebration.
With a few exceptions, most grocery stores, pharmacies, and other businesses will be open all day on Monday.
