Union Calls 50% Wage Hike Proposal “Inadequate” Amid Strike

LUBBOCK, TX — The strike by International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) workers at East and Gulf Coast ports now enters its third day, October 3rd. This action greatly impacts container handling and roll-on, roll-off services at ports from Texas to Maine, just as Americans head into the busy holiday shopping season.

On Monday, September 30, the United States Maritime Alliance proposed a 50% wage increase over six years in their latest contract offer. But the ILA shot this down, calling it “inadequate”, especially for workers in states like New Jersey where many only make $20 an hour, despite the minimum wage being $15. The union is looking for a bigger pay bump than the proposed $5-per-hour raise over the life of the contract.

Neither side has shared specific pay details, but the ILA has pointed out that it takes six years for workers to reach the top pay tier. They also noted that two-thirds of their members are on call without guaranteed work, which leaves them vulnerable during slow periods. Plus, benefits are based on the hours worked the previous year, adding to the uncertainty.

The ILA criticized employers for waiting until now to make a new offer, saying, “They were ready to negotiate back in 2022.”

The last major contract offer they received was in February 2023.

With rising inflation, the union claims that any previous wage increases have been wiped out, and they are frustrated that foreign shipping lines are not sharing their record profits with union workers. The ILA is also firmly against any automation that could take away jobs, stating that protecting jobs is a must.

In addition, the union wants a fair share of container royalties from the master contract, arguing that these funds should go directly to the workers and not be split with employers. “The ILA demands 100% of its Container Royalty monies, along with other jurisdictional demands, to ensure our members receive what is rightfully theirs.,” the ILA declared in a statement.

“The ILA seeks more than a $5 yearly wage increase. Our members don’t work typical 9-to-5 jobs; they work extraordinary hours, sacrificing time with their families. Our position is firm. They deserve a contract that recognizes their contributions, secures their jobs, and reflects the profits generated by their labor," said the release.
