IRS to Issue Stimulus Check to Those Who Missed 2021 Credit

WASHINGTON — The IRS announced that the agency will send an automatic payment to over one million taxpayers who did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit when filing their 2021 tax returns.

The amount will depend on a few factors, but the maximum an individual can receive is $1,400. Around $2.4 billion in payments are expected to be distributed.

In a statement, the IRS identified through internal data that many people eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit did not claim the stimulus check on their 2021 returns.

The IRS says no action is required from eligible taxpayers, and will be issued automatically by the end of January 2025. Payments will be sent via direct deposit or paper check based on the information on file with the IRS. A letter will be mailed to each recipient to confirm the payment.

“If taxpayers’ bank account information has changed since they filed their 2023 tax return, there’s no need to worry,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If the payment can’t be delivered to the bank account, it will be returned to the IRS, and the refund will be sent to the taxpayer’s address of record.”

Taxpayers who have not filed their 2021 returns still have time to claim the credit. The deadline to file is April 15, but those who qualify must submit a return to receive the credit and any other potential refunds.

Those who are unsure if they qualified for the Recovery Rebate Credit can check their 2021 returns or review their IRS online accounts at irs.gov.
