WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Gulf of Mexico has officially been renamed the Gulf of America on Google Maps for users in the U.S.
After an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, the change comes as part of Trump’s Executive Order 14172, known as "Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness."
From now on, Google Maps users in the U.S. will see the Gulf of America, while users in Mexico will still see the Gulf of Mexico. People in other countries will see both names on the map.
Google explained that it updates its maps with official name changes when government sources recognize them. Apple has not commented on whether it will follow suit, and its maps still use the old name.
President Trump declared February 9 as the first-ever "Gulf of America Day" during his visit to the region. The president made the announcement while flying over the Gulf in Air Force One and commemorated the renaming. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum shared an official map showing the new name during the event.
President Trump’s executive order also called for changing the name of Denali back to Mount McKinley, but this update has not yet been reflected on Google Maps.
In an official statement, President Trump explained that the Gulf of America has long been an important part of U.S. history. He said the renaming was part of his administration’s goal to restore American pride. The change officially applies to the U.S. Continental Shelf area, which covers the waters between the U.S., Mexico, and Cuba.
While the U.S. is moving forward with the new name, Mexico’s president has announced that the country will continue using the name Gulf of Mexico.
They have also stated that they will not adopt the U.S. name change.
