LUBBOCK, TX — As we ring in the New Year, cooler temperatures and strong winds are on the way, too! A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the western South Plains today, Dec. 30. Gusty winds and dry conditions create a higher risk of wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service, today will be sunny, with a high near 71°F. Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., strong winds up to 15-25 mph will create patchy blowing dust. Tonight, skies will be clear, and temperatures will drop to around 34°F.
Tuesday, New Year’s Eve, will be cooler, with a high near 53°F. Overnight, temperatures will dip to 30°F.
New Year's Day will be sunny with a high near 50°F, and light east winds will persist. Wednesday night will be mostly clear with lows around 31°F, and winds will shift to the southwest after midnight.
The first weekend in 2025 will bring mostly sunny weather and mild temperatures. Friday will be sunny, with a high near 58°F and light south winds at 5-10 mph. Friday night will be partly cloudy, with a low of around 35°F. On Saturday, expect mostly sunny skies and a high in the upper 50s, with partly cloudy skies. Sunday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 56°F.
