RUIDOSO, NM – A cow elk that had become tangled with a metal stool around its neck has been safely freed, according to the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.
According to the Ruidoso Police Department, the cow elk was spotted near the city on December 28 with a metal stool hanging from her neck, but officials said she was still able to move around, eat, and drink. NMDGF officers decided to give her some time to try to remove the stool on her own and avoid stressing her out by capturing her.
However, the elk could not free herself, so officers and local law enforcement sedated the animal and quickly removed the stool. The elk was checked over and appeared to be in good health.
As of Thursday, January 2, she was back with her herd and moving around freely.
Although this may seem like a bizarre incident, this is not the first time elk in Ruidoso have gotten tangled in objects. In January 2024, NMDGF officers had to remove lawn furniture from three other elk within a single week. While these incidents have decreased, they are still somewhat common.
The Ruidoso Police Department advises anyone in the area to contact the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish if they encounter any animals in need.
