LUBBOCK, TX — Lubbock and the South Plains area are in for a cold night as an arctic blast hits the region. Low wind chills will range between 0° and 15° below zero.
According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for the northern South Plains and the far Southwest Texas Panhandle from 6 PM to noon Tuesday, and a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for the rest of the area.
Today's temperatures will stay below freezing, with a high of around 29°F and mostly cloudy skies. Light snow is possible this afternoon, especially in places like Friona, Plainview, and Childress, but it’s not expected to accumulate more than half an inch.
Tonight will be even colder, with lows dropping into the single digits on the Caprock and teens elsewhere. Wind chills will feel like 0 to 15 below zero, and winds will shift to the north-northeast at 5-15 mph. Skies will start to clear after some evening clouds.
By Tuesday, things will warm up a bit, with sunny skies and a high near 36°F, though wind chills could still feel like zero in the morning. Tuesday night will be clear and cold, with lows around 23°F, and winds will pick up a bit from the southwest at 10-15 mph.
By Wednesday, the Lubbock area will see plenty of sunshine, and temperatures will warm to around 50°F. Wednesday night will be clear again, with a low of about 21°F.
The rest of the week looks much milder. Friday will bring sunny skies and a high near 58°F. Saturday will be even warmer, reaching a high of 62°F and staying mostly sunny. Saturday night will cool down to around 27°F, and Sunday will be sunny with a high near 54°F.
