South Plains Under Extreme Cold Watch This Week

 

LUBBOCK, TX—The South Plains is expected to see colder temperatures starting Tuesday, with an Extreme Cold Watch in effect through midday Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, dangerous wind chills and light wintry precipitation are possible in the northern areas. The watch will be in effect for the entire region from Tuesday night through Thursday morning.

Today's weather will stay warm and breezy, with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Expect partly sunny skies, with a high near 63°F and a south-southwest wind of around 15 mph.

Tonight will bring cooler temperatures, with mostly cloudy skies and a low near 29°F. Winds will shift, becoming light and variable at 10 to 15 mph.

Tuesday will see colder weather and the beginning of the Extreme Cold Watch, with a high near 36°F and a north-northeast wind around 10 to 15 mph. Wind chills could make it feel like temperatures are below freezing.

Tuesday night will be cold, with partly cloudy skies and a low of around 9°F. Wind chill values could dip as low as -3°F, with northeast winds at 10 to 15 mph.

Wednesday will be sunny but cold, with a high near 28°F. Winds will remain out of the north-northeast at 10 to 15 mph, becoming east in the afternoon. Wednesday night will be partly cloudy, with a low of around 7°F and east winds at 5 to 15 mph.

Into the weekend, expect mostly sunny skies with a high near the upper 30s and light winds from the south-southeast at 5 to 10 mph. Friday night will cool down to around 21°F with partly cloudy skies. Saturday will warm up a bit, reaching a high near 56°F and staying sunny. Saturday night will be mostly clear with a low near 30°F, and Sunday looks to be sunny and warm again with a high near 70°F.
