LUBBOCK, TX — Elevated fire weather and strong winds are expected across the South Plains this week, with the worst conditions likely on Friday. A fire weather watch is in place for Wednesday afternoon, and winds could gust up to 55 mph by Friday, bringing blowing dust and dangerous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, today will be sunny, with a high near 77°F and southwest winds at 15 mph. Tonight, skies will be mostly clear, with lows around 39°F and winds at 10-15 mph.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 79°F. Winds will be from the west at 10-15 mph, and temperatures will drop to 47°F overnight with light winds.
By Wednesday, winds will pick up, reaching 20-30 mph by the afternoon, with gusts up to 60 mph in some areas. Expect patchy blowing dust after noon and a high of around 75°F. Temperatures will dip to 44°F overnight with decreasing winds. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for the South Plains, southwest Texas Panhandle, and most of the Rolling Plains Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Thursday will bring more wind, with gusts up to 55 mph expected on Friday. Highs will be around 63°F, and areas of blowing dust are likely. Winds will increase to 30-40 mph in the afternoon.
Conditions will calm down by the weekend. Saturday will be mostly sunny with a high near 64°F, and Sunday will be sunny with a high around 72°F.
