LUBBOCK, Texas — The National Weather Service warns the South Plains of a heightened risk for severe thunderstorms, with the potential for significant weather impacts.
The National Weather Service has placed parts of the region under an Enhanced Risk category, indicating a higher probability for dangerous storms.

The most serious threats include hail up to the size of softballs, damaging wind gusts reaching 80 mph, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes.
The storm risk is expected to peak this afternoon and evening. A 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms is in the forecast for this afternoon, with some storms likely to become severe. Temperatures will reach near 80°, with winds from the east around 10 mph.
Storm chances increase slightly tonight, with a 50% chance of thunderstorms, mainly before 10 p.m. Severe weather could continue into the evening hours before tapering off overnight. Skies will remain mostly cloudy with a low around 58°. Rainfall amounts could vary, but locally heavier downpours are possible in areas that experience stronger storms.
Emergency officials urge residents to stay weather-aware throughout the day.
