Southlake Carroll Escapes With Win Over Frenship

 

ABILENE, TX — Frenship gave No. 4-ranked Southlake Carroll everything it could handle Friday, but the Tigers came up just short in a 49-42 loss in a Class 6A Division II area round playoff game at Abilene Christian University's Wildcat Stadium. 

Frenship jumped out to leads of 14-0 and 21-7, and the game was tied 28-28 at halftime.

The Tigers continued to trade punches with the Dragons, tying the game a final time at 42-42 on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Holden Phillips to Leyton Stone with 6:35 remaining.

Carroll scored the game-winning TD with 3:18 left on a 1-yard run by quarterback Angelo Renda. 

Frenship drove as far as Carroll's 25-yard line with about 1:30 remaining, but the Tigers were unable to get any closer.

Frenship finished its season with a record of 10-2, while Carroll improved to 12-0. The Dragons will move on to play the winner of Hebron and Bowie next week in the regional semifinals.

8:31 p.m. Angelo Renda with 1-yard TD run, and Southlake Carroll retakes the lead at 49-42 with 3:18 remaining.

8:22 p.m. Frenship's Leyton Stone with a 17-yard TD catch from Holden Phillips with 6:35 left in the 4th quarter, and this game is tied again 42-42.

8:20 p.m. Frenship somehow converts a fourth down when Chase Campbell was stopped on a run then pitched the ball back to Noah Ingram, who picked up the first down.

8:16 p.m. Frenship converts a third down just when it appeared Phillips might be sacked in the end zone. Big catch by Noah Ingram. Then Leyton Stone with a catch on a deep pass a couple plays later, and Frenship is now on Carroll's 26-yard line with 8:45 remaining.

8:12 p.m. Wow. Frenship's Hudson Simpson with an interception, and Frenship gets the ball back on its own 6-yard line.

8:11 p.m. Frenship goes for a 4th down on its own 45, and the Tigers are stopped. Huge play with 11:03 remaining.

8:07 p.m. Southlake Carroll 42, Frenship 35 - end of 3rd Qtr

8:06 p.m. Frenship is driving near midfield as we reach the end of the third quarter. 

8:02 p.m. Angelo Renda with a TD pass to Blake Gunter, and Carroll reclaims the lead at 42-35 with 1:01 left in the third quarter.

7:55 p.m. Holden Phillips scrambled on a 4th and 6 to pick up the first down in the red zone and keep the drive alive.

7:54 p.m. Leyton Stone with a TD catch from Holden Phillips, and Frenship has tied the game again 35-35 with 4:57 left in the 3rd quarter.

7:49 p.m. Frenship has driven to Carroll's 23-yard line. A highlight-reel catch by Maverick Allen to save what likely would have been an interception for Carroll kept the drive alive.

7:41 p.m. Christian Glenn breaks free for a TD run up the middle, and Carroll takes a 35-28 lead with 10:33 left in the 3rd quarter.

7:37 p.m. Carroll will receive the opening kickoff of the second half.

7:04 p.m. Frenship 28, Southlake Carroll 28 - HALFTIME

6:59 p.m. Holden Phillips scrambles and flips a nifty shovel pass to Leyton Stone on third down, and Frenship answers right back to tie the game at 28-28 with 37 seconds left in the 2nd quarter.

6:55 p.m. Frenship is driving and is inside Carroll's red zone in the final minute of the half.

6:48 p.m. Renda with a TD run, and Southlake Carroll has its first lead at 28-21 with 5:04 left in the 2nd quarter.

6:45 p.m. Carroll's William Chen with an interception, and momentum has swung in a big way to the Dragons.

6:42 p.m. Parker Harris returns the punt for a touchdown, and we have a tie game. Frenship 21, Southlake Carroll 21 with 6:24 left in the 2nd quarter.

6:41 p.m. Frenship forced to punt for the first time tonight.

6:38 p.m. Phillips is sacked, and Frenship faces a 2nd and 17.

6:36 p.m. Renda with an 11-yard TD run, and Carroll is within 21-14 with 8:30 left in the 2nd quarter.

6:35 p.m. Carroll with a big break. The Dragons catch a tipped pass, and they're down to the 11-yard line.

6:32 p.m. Frenship WR Chase Campbell already has five catches for 122 yards.

6:31 p.m. Leyton Stone hauls in a 43-yard TD pass from Holden Phillips, and Frenship pushes its lead to 21-7 with 9:58 left in the 2nd quarter.

6:26 p.m. Frenship 14, Southlake Carroll 7 - end 1st Qtr

6:25 p.m. Carroll scores on the final play of the first quarter. A busted coverage leads to a wide-open TD pass from Angelo Renda to Blake Gunter. Frenship's lead is cut to 14-7.

6:19 p.m. Frenship's Cooper Archer blows up a Carroll running play, and the Dragons are facing a 2nd and 15. But Carroll responds with a 20-yard passing play to move the chains.

6:16 p.m. Chase Campbell with a 6-yard TD run, and the Frenship Tigers lead No. 4-ranked Southlake Carroll 14-0 with 4:07 left in the 1st quarter.

6:13 p.m. Frenship converts on third down, and the Tigers are at Carroll's 40.

6:10 p.m. Frenship's defense with a big stop on 4th and 7, and the Tigers will take over on their own 38.

6:01 p.m. Chase Campbell breaks loose after a short pass from Holden Phillips and takes it all the way for an 82-yard touchdown. Frenship leads 7-0 just 16 seconds into the game.
