Texas Tech Phasing Out Blackboard, Moving to Canvas

LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech University is making a major change to how students access their classes online. The school is officially moving away from Blackboard and will fully switch to Canvas as its learning management system by Fall 2025.

According to Dr. Brian Still, Vice Provost for Texas Tech Online, the transition has been in the works since late 2024. Some courses began using Canvas, branded as RaiderCanvas, as early as October.

By Spring 2025, all faculty had made the switch, and early access had been available to staff since the previous fall.

During the spring 2025 semester, most students were still using Blackboard, but several courses had already started moving to RaiderCanvas. Those enrolled in Canvas-based classes should have received emails with login instructions and support resources.

By Summer 2025, Canvas will become the main platform for courses, and by the start of the Fall 2025 semester, Blackboard will no longer be in use at Texas Tech.

The university first adopted Blackboard in the early 2000s, but Texas Tech says the shift to Canvas “improves user experience and gives instructors more flexibility in how they manage their courses.”
