LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech Athletics posted the highest term and cumulative grade-point averages in department history this fall, the university announced Wednesday.
Texas Tech’s more than 375 student-athletes combined for a 3.49 term GPA, surpassing the previous record of 3.39 set during the 2024 fall semester. The strong academic performance pushed the department’s cumulative GPA to 3.48 — breaking the prior mark of 3.41 achieved last spring.
The fall semester marked the 22nd consecutive term in which Texas Tech student-athletes recorded at least a 3.0 department GPA. All 13 athletic programs finished both the fall term and cumulative GPA above 3.0, with six teams — baseball, football, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, softball and women’s track and field — setting program records for term GPA.
Men’s tennis led all programs with a 3.79 term GPA, followed by soccer (3.74), women’s basketball (3.70), women’s track and field (3.63), softball (3.63), women’s tennis (3.63) and volleyball (3.59). Eleven teams posted at least a 3.2 term GPA, including baseball (3.42), men’s and women’s golf (3.40 each) and football, which recorded a program-best 3.23 GPA. The football program has seen steady academic gains under head coach Joey McGuire, coinciding with the team’s on-field success, including this season’s Big 12 title and College Football Playoff appearance.
Eight teams — baseball, football, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, softball, women’s track and field, soccer and volleyball — also set new records for cumulative GPA. Soccer led the department with a 3.80 cumulative GPA, followed by men’s tennis (3.68), volleyball (3.61), softball (3.58), women’s track and field (3.57), women’s basketball (3.55), men’s golf (3.53) and women’s tennis (3.52).
A record 110 student-athletes, representing 29 percent of the department, earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. In addition, 82 percent — 315 student-athletes — posted at least a 3.0 term GPA, matching the highest percentage on record. The academic honors also included 86 student-athletes on the President’s List and 96 on the Dean’s List.
Twenty-seven student-athletes from seven sports earned degrees during fall commencement ceremonies at United Supermarkets Arena. The graduating group finished with a 3.43 cumulative GPA.
Texas Tech credited the Marsha Sharp Center’s academic staff for guiding student-athletes from enrollment through graduation. The center provides private study spaces, computer labs, supplemental instruction classrooms and tutoring and mentoring support.
