Lubbock Police Department Warns of New Scams

LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock Police Department has issued a warning about a series of scams currently targeting residents in the Hub City.

These scams involve a variety of tactics, ranging from demands for gift cards to requests for Bitcoin, and they do not discriminate based on age.

In a statement released on social media, the department emphasized several key points to help residents avoid falling victim to these schemes:

• Law Enforcement Communication: The Lubbock Police Department (LPD) and other law enforcement agencies will never contact individuals to inform them they owe money. They categorically stated, “We literally DO NOT collect money.”
• Red Flags: If a caller insists that the recipient stay on the phone while obtaining gift cards, money, or Bitcoin, this is a significant red flag. The department advises residents to hang up immediately in such situations.
• Verification of Claims: The police urged residents to always verify the legitimacy of the agency or organization making the claims. They recommended hanging up and calling the legitimate number of the agency in question to confirm the authenticity of the call. According to the department, “Spoiler Alert: It’s not.”
