LONDON, ENGLAND – Esteemed actress Dame Maggie Smith, known for her roles in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter series, has passed away at the age of 89. Smith died at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.
Throughout her illustrious career, Smith received six Academy Award nominations and won two Oscars: Best Actress for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Best Supporting Actress for California Suite. She was also the recipient of five BAFTA Awards, solidifying her legacy in the film industry.
Despite these accolades, Smith is perhaps most beloved for her roles as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films and as the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley, in Downton Abbey.
Her death adds to the loss of other iconic actors from the Harry Potter franchise, including Michael Gambon, Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, and Robbie Coltrane, along with many others from the beloved series.
