Fall Is Here: Lubbock Braces for Temperature Drop and Rain

 

LUBBOCK, TX — For those eagerly awaiting fall, it will finally arrive this week. A cold front is expected to move through on Tuesday evening, bringing highs in the 60s by Wednesday. Cooler temperatures will continue, with rain likely from Friday through the weekend.

Have you noticed the warm weather over the past 31 days? You’re not mistaken. According to the National Weather Service, Lubbock's average high temperature from September 13 to October 13 has been 91.3°F, making it the hottest mid-September to mid-October period on record. It surpasses the previous record of 89.1°F set in 1956.

The NWS forecast predicts today’s highs of nearly 82°F, accompanied by sunny skies and a 10 mph breeze from the east. Expect mostly clear weather, with temperatures dropping to around 56°F tonight. Southeast winds will breeze around 5 mph, becoming southwest after midnight.

Temperatures start to warm up for the last time this week as sunny skies continue on Tuesday. The high will be near 88°F, and southwest winds will be at 10 mph. Tuesday evening will remain mostly clear, with lows settling around 47°F as the cold front hits the South Plains.

Wednesday will be sunny, with a high near 66°F and an east-northeast wind shifting to the southeast in the afternoon. Wednesday night will be mostly clear, with a low of around 50°F. 

On Thursday, expect mostly sunny skies and a high near 73°F, with south winds of 10 to 20 mph. Thursday night will bring mostly cloudy conditions, with temperatures dropping to around 58°F and south winds gusting up to 25 mph.

This weekend, expect a mix of weather conditions. Friday features a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 71°F and gusty south winds. By Friday night, the chance of rain increases to 60%, with temperatures dropping to around 58°F. Saturday will likely see more showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 68°F and a 50% chance of rain overnight. Sunday offers a 30 percent chance of showers, but it will be partly sunny with a high of around 73°F.
