LUBBOCK, TX — Lubbockites should brace for winter weather this week as cooler temperatures and snow are expected to move into the region.
According to the National Weather Service, there are two potential windows for snow: the first starting Tuesday night and continuing into Wednesday, and a second round on Thursday.
Today's temperatures will remain cool, with a high near 42°F under partly cloudy skies. Light southeast winds will pick up in the afternoon, but stay calm. Tonight, expect mostly cloudy skies and temperatures dropping to around 24°F, with an east-southeast wind at about 5 mph.
The real weather changes will begin Tuesday night. Accumulating snow is expected across most of the region, particularly on the Caprock, beginning late Tuesday and continuing early Wednesday morning. After midnight, a 20% chance of snow is forecast, with a low of around 20°F. Winds will be from the east-northeast at 10 mph. As snow accumulates, travel may become hazardous on Wednesday, particularly on roads in higher elevations.
The snow will not be done after Wednesday. A second round of snowfall is possible on Thursday, which could lead to more widespread accumulations throughout the region.
Over the weekend, Lubbock will see a break from the snow, with clearer skies and milder temperatures. Friday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 41°F and a north wind at 5-10 mph. Friday night will be mostly clear, with a low of around 24°F. Saturday will bring sunshine and a high near 51°F, while Saturday night will be partly cloudy with lows around 27°F. By Sunday, expect mostly sunny skies and a high near 46°F.
