One Dead, One Injured in Lubbock County Crash

 

LUBBOCK COUNTY, TX — A crash on U.S. Highway 62/82 on Monday afternoon left one person dead and one with minor injuries.

According to the DPS, at around 1:50 pm, a 2018 Acura RDX was parked on the eastbound shoulder of U.S. 62/82 when it was rear-ended by a 2020 Ford F-250 towing a utility trailer. 

The force of the collision sent both vehicles off the road and into the barrow ditch, where they stopped near County Road 6300.

The driver of the Acura, Virginia Castano-Marquez, 64, from El Paso, was pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries. 

The driver of the Ford F-250, Karrie Dawn Merritt, 49, from Lubbock, was taken to University Medical Center in Lubbock with minor injuries. DPS officials said Merritt was not wearing a seatbelt.

The weather was cloudy with light rain during the crash, and the road conditions were wet. The posted speed limit in the area was 75 mph.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
