Lubbock Woman Killed in Early Morning Crash on US 62

TERRY COUNTY, TX — A Lubbock woman was killed in a fatal car crash early Tuesday morning on US 62.

According to the Texas Department of Safety, the accident happened on US 62, about half a mile northeast of Wellman, at about 5:30 a.m. on February 6.

The driver, Abel Ruiz Hernandez, 73, of Lubbock, was not injured. However, his passenger, Jessica Leigh Hernandez, 50, also of Lubbock, was killed at the scene from the injuries she sustained in the crash.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says Hernandez was driving a 2010 Honda Fit when the car entered a construction zone and moved into the left lane. After leaving the roadway and hitting the center median, Hernandez overcorrected, causing the car to skid, roll, and come to a stop on its side in the northbound lanes of the highway.

The weather was clear, and the road was dry. The posted speed limit was 75 miles per hour.

Abel Hernandez was wearing his seatbelt, but Jessica Hernandez was not.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
