EL SEGUNDO, CA — Tri-Union Seafoods is recalling canned tuna sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brand names.
According to the FDA, the recall follows a report from the company’s supplier about a defect in the “easy open” pull-tab lids on several cans. The defect could cause the seal on the can to break, which might lead to leaking or even contamination by Clostridium botulinum.
These harmful bacteria can cause botulism, a potentially deadly form of food poisoning. While no illnesses have been reported, the company recalled the products to be safe.
If anyone has recalled tuna cans, they should not eat them, even if they seem fine or do not look spoiled. Clostridium botulinum can grow in sealed cans, and the toxins it produces can cause serious health problems, including muscle paralysis, difficulty breathing, and even death.
The recalled products were sold in various locations across the country. H-E-B cans were distributed in Texas, while Trader Joe’s cans were sold in states such as Delaware, Illinois, and New York.
Genova 7-oz. cans were sold at Costco in Florida and Georgia, and 5-oz. cans were available at stores like Harris Teeter, Publix, and Walmart in California, Florida, Georgia, and Texas.
People can find the specific product details, including can codes and “Best If Used By” dates, printed on the bottom of the cans.
If you have one of the affected products, Tri-Union Seafoods suggests returning it to the store for a full refund, throwing it away, or contacting them directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product.
