DALLAS, TX — Southwest Airlines will begin charging customers for checked luggage, ending the airline's tradition of offering free checked bags.
According to a release from Southwest Airlines, starting May 28, Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and passengers flying on Business Select fares can still get two free checked bags. A-List Members will get one free checked bag, and Rapid Rewards Credit Card holders will also get one free checked bag.
For everyone else, there will be a fee for the first and second checked bags if passengers buy a Wanna Get Away ticket.
The airline has not yet announced how much each bag will cost.
Along with the new baggage policy, Southwest is rolling out a "Basic Fare" for its cheapest tickets. This is part of the airline's push to attract customers who want lower fares and are not as concerned with extra perks. In 2026, Southwest will also start assigning seats and is transitioning away from its current open-seating system.
“We recognize these changes may be a disappointment to some, but know we’re committed to building a Southwest that will continue to offer you low fares, convenient flights to destinations you want, and a travel experience that is rewarding,” said Southwest President and CEO Bob Jordan.
Southwest is also updating its Rapid Rewards program. Business Select fares will earn more Rapid Rewards points, while Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus fares will earn fewer points. Starting May 28, the Basic Fare will be available as the lowest-priced option, but passengers will have fewer benefits with this ticket. Flight credits will also expire depending on which fare type is purchased. A chart showing each fare’s benefits are below:
