Wind, Dust, and Fire Danger in the South Plains This Week

 

LUBBOCK, TX — This week, the South Plains area is forecasted to have dangerous fire weather, strong winds, and blowing dust. A Red Flag Warning is in effect today, March 17, and conditions are expected to stay extreme at the beginning of the week before cooling down mid-week and warming up again by the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, today will be sunny with a high of 83° and breezy winds from the southwest at 15 to 25 mph. Tonight, expect partly cloudy skies and a low around 52°, with winds still blowing at 20 mph from the south-southwest.

On Tuesday, blowing dust will start after 1 p.m., with mostly sunny skies and a high of 84°. Winds will pick up throughout the day, reaching 30 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph. Tuesday night will bring more dust before 9 p.m., followed by mostly clear skies and a low of 42°. Winds will be strong, gusting up to 60 mph.

Wednesday will be sunny but cooler, with a high of 59° and a breezy north-northwest wind at 20 to 25 mph. Wednesday night will be clear, with a low of around 30° and winds shifting north to southeast after midnight.

Thursday will bring sunny skies and a high near 65°, with winds picking up from the south at 15 to 20 mph. Thursday night will be mostly clear, with a low of around 42° and winds at 15 to 20 mph.

On Friday, expect sunny weather and a high of 73°, with winds from the southwest at 15 to 20 mph. Friday night will be mostly clear, with temperatures dropping to around 37°.

Saturday will be sunny with a high of 76°, and Saturday night will be partly cloudy, with a low of around 47°. Sunday will bring mostly sunny skies and a high near 72° to end the weekend with mild weather.
