Helicopter Crashes Into the Hudson, Killing 6 People

NEW YORK, NY — A helicopter carrying six people crashed into the Hudson River just off Manhattan on Thursday afternoon, killing everyone on board, officials confirmed.

The New York City Fire Department said it received a report of the crash at 3:17 p.m. near Pier 40. According to a city official speaking to The Associated Press, all six occupants of the helicopter were confirmed dead.

Footage shared on social media showed the Bell 206 helicopter flipped upside-down and largely submerged in the river. Multiple rescue boats were seen circling the wreckage while emergency personnel worked at the scene.

The helicopter came down near the end of a long maintenance pier connected to a ventilation tower for the Holland Tunnel. Fire trucks and other emergency vehicles responded quickly, lining the surrounding streets with lights flashing as first responders launched a water rescue effort.

The skies above Manhattan are frequently busy with both helicopter and airplane traffic. Numerous helipads along the island’s edge serve corporate, commuter, and tourist aircraft.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to lead the inquiry into what led to the deadly incident.
