Lubbock's Latest Restaurant Health Inspections Apr. 12-18

 

LUBBOCK, TX — A popular chain chicken restaurant received a lower health inspection score last week after earning a higher score less than two months earlier, resulting in a $175 repeat violation fee. However, the Hub City only saw 5 adequate performers and 21 top performers.

Top performers have scores considered 90 and above, while adequate performers score between 80 and 89. Low performers have scores of 79 and below.

Below is the list of performers for the week of April 12 through April 18:

Low Performers:

Popeye’s at 2505 82nd Street
Score: 71
Violations: 24

  • Coleslaw stored in the reach in cooler measured at 48°F. Employee stated that coleslaw was prepared the previous day.
  • Cooked rice was stored int he hot warming table measured at 104°F for less than four hours.
  • Mashed potatoes stored in the warming table measured at 129°F for less than four hours.
  • Raw bone in chicken was cooked to an internal temperature of below 165°F. Temperature was taken next to the bone and initially measured below 165°F Thermometer was held in place to allow carryover cooking to finish the cooking process. Temperature did not rise above 155°F
  • Sanitizer bucket in the fryer area measured above 400 ppm quaternary ammonium solution.
  • Sanitizing compartment, in active use, measured below 200 ppm quaternary ammonium solution. PIC stated that sanitizer dispenser was broken.
  • Sanitizer bucket was stored on top of a prep table.
  • No ambient air thermometer was accessible in the reach in cooler.
  • Back door of the facility was propped open, not preventing entry of pests.
  • Reach in freezer had a heavy accumulation of ice on the back of the unit.
  • Scoop used to dispense bulk food item was stored in the food items and did not contain a designated handle.
  • Single-use cup used to dispense ice at the drive-thru window.
  • Single-use cup was used to dispense frozen shrimp in the prep station.
  • Single-use paper cup was reused as a scoop to dispense bulk foods.
  • Bulk storage container containing a white powder was not labeled to identify the contents.
  • Floor drain next to the walk in cooler was heavily soiled with a buildup of food debris.
  • Floor of the walk in cooler was heavily soiled with a buildup of food debris.
  • Interior surface of the reach in cooler was heavily soiled with food residue.
  • A heavy accumulation of flour and other debris was present on the swamp cooler unit in the kitchen.
  • Vent cover of the walk in freezer was heavily soiled with a buildup of dust and other debris.
  • Bulk storage food container had a heavy accumulation of flour on the container.
  • AVB not repaired at time of inspection. Repeat violation fee issued. 30 days to repair issue.
  • Due to the number and nature of violations observed, a lack of active managerial control was demonstrated.
  • Ceiling tile not installed properly, gap present.

 

Adequate Performers:

Kokomo Korean Corndog Mochi Donuts & Boba Tea at 5217 82nd Street

Violations: 13

  • Cooked RTE/TCS boba held at 71°F on front prep line. Boba had been prepared for less than 4 hours.
  • Raw shell eggs stored above RTE butter, cheese, and potato fries. No cross contamination was observed.
  • Ice transport buckets stored inverted on top of ice maker with food-contact surface of ice bucket stored on soiled surface of ice maker.
  • Sanitizer bucket with sanitizer stored on clean side of 3-compartment sink.
  • Facility hot water tempted at 86°F. Hot water generation and distribution system was not sufficient to meet the peak hot water demands of the establishment.
  • An open container of commercially prepared RTE/TCS milk open with no date marking stored in reach in prep cooler. PIC stated the milk had been opened 4/14.
  • A box of single-use napkins stored on floor of storage room.
  • In-use scoop stored in garlic powder between-uses, stored with handle in contact with garlic powder.
  • In-use scoop stored in bulk flour between-uses, stored with handle in contact with flour.
  • Single-use spoon used as a scoop stored in container crushed RTE cookies.
  • Two bulk containers with an unknown white powder were stored on shelf under prep table in kitchen.
  • Employee personal phone and keys stored on prep surface of prep freezer.
  • Employee personal drink stored on prep counter in front prep area.

Taqueria Y Dulceria Guadlajara at 1925 19th Street

  • Prepared on site, Pico de Gallo, stored in container that does not bear a date or day. PIC stated Pico de Gallo was prepared on 4.13.2025.
  • Commercially prepared RTE hot dogs stored in an open package that does not bear a date or day. PIC stated package was opened 4.13.2025.
  • Raw shell eggs stored above RTE cream cheese in bakery RIC.
  • Raw pork stored above RTE menudo in WIC.
  • Employee handle raw beef, then handle clean utensil without hand wash and glove change.
  • Working container with pink liquid, not individually identified with the common name of the material.
  • Working container with purple liquid, not individually identified with the common name of the material.
  • Hand drying provision not available at drink station hand sink.
  • Scrub pad stored in back hand sink.
  • Hand drying provision not available at bakery hand sink.
  • Hand washing cleanser not available at drink station hand sink.

Violations: 9

  • Raw shelled eggs were stored above RTE pasteurized liquid eggs in the reach in cooler in a manner that did not prevent cross contamination.
  • Sanitizer bucket in the prep area measured below 50 ppm chlorine solution.
  • Spray bottle containing a yellow liquid was not labeled to identify the contents.
  • Rubber spatula, stored with clean utensils in the warewash area, was heavily damaged such that it was not maintained in good repair.
  • Frozen shrimp were stored thawing in a bucket under stagnant water.
  • Ice bucket was not stored covered or inverted. Stagnant water present at the bottom of the utensil.
  • Forks, not prewrapped, placed for self-service by consumers were stored with the food contact surface facing out.
  • Bulk storage of a brown powder was not labeled to identify the contents.
  • Food handlers not available at time of inspection. PIC stated that they would send food handler certifications via email.

  • Cooked chili in warmer at 118°F after stirring thoroughly for less than 1 hour. Other items in same warming unit at 135°F or above.
  • Table mounted can opener next to canned goods storage was not in current or recent use and had visible accumulation of tomato sauce debris dried on the blade.
  • Hand sink located at the back prep line near the back door did not have any paper towels in the dispenser or other hand drying provision available.
  • Two sanitizer buckets were stored directly on the floor on the back prep line near the back door.
  • Prep table inside walk in cooler used for preparing raw meat products had a bulk plastic container of chicken marinade sauce located directly on the floor.
  • One stack of metal food containers was stored with the containers still wet and stacked inside one another in a manner that does not allow for air drying.
  • Sealed employee drink located on prep table not in current use near the walk in cooler.
