Lubbock's Latest Restaurant Health Inspections May 17-24

 

LUBBOCK, TX — Three Lubbock restaurants received top scores in the Hub City’s latest round of health inspections, while two local donut shops were rated as adequate or low performers for multiple health code violations.

Top performers have scores considered 90 and above, while adequate performers score between 80 and 89. Low performers have scores of 79 and below.

Below is the list of performers for the week of May 17 through May 24:

Low Performers:

Rise N Shine Donuts at 6302 Frankford Avenue
Score: 76
Violations: 24

  • Ready-to-eat kolaches hot holding in warming cabinet at front counter were at 90°F for less than 4 hours. Facility does not have Time-As-A-Control variance.
  • Ready-to eat Kolaches are being held in a warming cabinet using time-as-a-control without approved written procedures or any notification to the regulatory authority.
  • Raw chorizo was stored on shelf in the the reach-in cooler above raw shell eggs.
  • An open gallon of ready-to-eat milk was not date marked with date opened. PIC states it was opened 2 days ago.
  • Kitchen hand sink had no hand washing cleanser.
  • Paper towels not available at kitchen hand washing sink.
  • Yellow trays used to store kolaches in the reach-in freezer were visibly damaged, chipped on the food contact surfaces.
  • A metal scoop stored inside a bulk food bin was visible damaged, chipped on the food contact surfaces.
  • Ready-to-eat tamales stored in the reach-in cooler were stored uncovered.
  • Kolaches stored on yellow trays in the reach-in freezer were stored uncovered.
  • Mop sink on the corner nearest the 3-compartment sink is no longer sealed to the wall to prevent seepage.
  • A single-use glove was found stored inside the cinnamon sugar mix container between uses.
  • The outer surfaces of the vent hood over the fryer were visibly soiled. The interior and filters were in compliance.
  • Shelves with food service item storage under the prep table, and the lid of the larger reach-in freezer, were visibly soiled with food residues.
  • The mixer stored on the prep table in the dry storage room had the visibly soiled nonfood contact surfaces.
  • Plastic container of maintenance tools was stored on top of canned food storage in the prep area.
  • Floors and walls were visibly soiled in the prep area.
  • Personal items (purse, cell phone, drinks) were stored in the prep area over prep table, and over food storage areas.
  • Mops are stored inside a bucket next to the mop sink in a manner that does not allow for air-drying between uses.
  • Hand sink in the restroom is visibly soiled inside the basin.
  • Toilet tank is visibly cracked in two places, with cracks holding soil.
  • An opened, and in-use gallon container of ready-to-eat milk in the reach-in cooler had a manufacturer's use-by-date of 4/29/25.
  • Due to the nature of violations during the Routine Food Safety Inspection, food safety knowledge was not demonstrated.
  • The plastic wall covering behind the three-compartment sink is attached to the sink faucet area with screws, and not attached to the wall. There is an open air space behind the sinks.

Adequate Performers:

IHOP at 7735 Marsha Sharp West
Score: 82
Violations: 12

  • Pans of rehydrated hash browns stored in the reach-in cooler and in the walk-in cooler were not cold holding at 41°F or below for longer than 4 hours: prep date 5/22 and at 52°F, 46°F, 53°F.
  • Clean glasses stored in a clean rack on the clean side of the dishwasher were visibly soiled.
  • Employees cleaning with wiping towels, and another handled his hat and hair, proceeded to put on food service gloves without a proper hand wash.
  • Due to the nature of violations found during this Routine inspection, food safety knowledge was not demonstrated.
  • Facility is open and operating the food service without a valid permit.
  • The hot water at all the hand sinks did not meet the 100°F minimum. 87°F, 78°F.
  • The hand sink at the ware wash area wash blocked by dish racks being stored in front of it.
  • Employee with a long beard did not have it restrained to prevent contamination.
  • Unlidded personal drinks stored in the prep area.
  • Foods stored in the reach-in freezer are not covered for protection.
  • Container of ready-to-eat cookie crumbs stored on a shelf in the prep area was not covered for protection.
  • Certified food manager certificate was not posted in a location conspicuous to the consumer.

J&M Barbeque at 3605 34th Street
Score: 85
Violations: 11

  • Precooked sausage links were stored in a hot holding unit, measuring 125°F. PIC stated the employee must not have measured their temperature after coming off the smoker. The other products in the hot holding unit were all 135°F or above. Sausage links had been out of refrigeration for less than 2 hours.
  • The terminating head of the spray hose hangs below the flood level rim of the 3 compartment sink.
  • Running the hand sink long enough for a proper hand wash caused a backup from a floor drain down the line, which was then conveying sewage onto the kitchen floor.
  • Handle of scoop for bulk container of sugar was stored in the product.
  • Ice bucket was stored uncovered and not inverted on top of the ice machine.
  • Soiled wet linens were stored on low shelves in kitchen.
  • Two containers of bulk stored granule ingredients were unlabeled.
  • Vent hood above stove and fryer had heavy accumulation of debris.
  • No covered receptacle in women's restroom.
  • Handwashing sign in men's restroom was missing.
  • The back door by the office area has light shining through the entire right side and parts of the top and bottom.

Shipley Do-nuts at 5911 19th Street
Score: 89
Violations: 5

  • Quaternary ammonium solution, stored in a sanitizer bucket on a bottom shelf of the front counter, was tested <200 ppm.
  • Food handler certificates were not available at the facility.
  • Container of sausages, located in reach-in cooler on west wall of kitchen, was date marked for 5/15, 1 day past 7-day mark rule.
  • Beverage reach-in cooler, located on west wall near front counter, did not have a thermometer.
  • Hand sink, located next to 3 compartment sink, had an empty blueberry can stored near faucets.
