Deputy Shot in Houston; Suspect Captured After Swimming Escape

HOUSTON, TX — A Texas deputy constable was fatally shot on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, while driving to work in his personal vehicle. The shooting occurred when a man approached the deputy's car at a Houston intersection and fired multiple rounds, according to reports.

The suspect subsequently led authorities on a pursuit that ended approximately 60 miles away in the waters off Galveston. The individual attempted to avoid capture by swimming but was eventually apprehended with the assistance of a marine unit, as reported by the Port of Galveston Police Department.

The deputy, Maher Husseini, has served as a Harris County constable since 2021.

Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz stated that investigators are working to determine the motive behind the shooting and whether Husseini was specifically targeted. The possibility of road rage is also being explored, reports state.

“It’s a tragic loss for the community, especially for someone dedicated to public service,” Diaz remarked.

Preliminary information indicates that Husseini was not in uniform at the time of the incident.

Bullet holes were visible through the passenger side window of his SUV at the scene.

Husseini was transported to a Houston hospital, where he was pronounced dead, as confirmed by Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman.

The name of the suspect in custody has not been released. According to a statement from the Port of Galveston police, the suspect’s pursuit ended in a crash, and he was found swimming in the water before being arrested and taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement affirming that "the dangerous criminal who ambushed and murdered Deputy Constable Husseini will face the full extent of the law."
