JAL, NM — The Lea County Sheriff’s Office concluded its investigation into human remains found in Jal, New Mexico, earlier this month, stating that the remains have “no legal or medical significance.”
The investigation began after a resident reported seeing a man throwing bones out of his vehicle. Authorities searched the area and recovered bone fragments, which were confirmed to be human. A search of the man’s home on South 4th Street led to the discovery of seven skulls, each with decorative pieces embedded or carved into them.
According to Lea County Undersheriff Micheal Walker, investigators determined that the skulls were not linked to any criminal activity. The skulls purchased online originated outside the United States and were sold as decorative items.
"The remains were obtained legally and have no connection to any ongoing investigations," Walker said in a statement Thursday night.
Initially, authorities had speculated that the remains might be linked to the 2019 disappearance of Angela McManes. However, once it was confirmed that the skulls were bought online as decorative pieces, investigators ruled out any connection to McManes’ case.
The skulls will be cremated, LCSO said, and the man who was found with the remains was arrested on unrelated misdemeanor charges.
With the investigation now closed, authorities confirmed there is no further action required, and no criminal charges will be filed related to the human remains.
