Terrell Police Officer Fatally Shot During Traffic Stop

 

TERRELL, TX — A Terrell police officer was fatally shot during a traffic stop late Sunday night. Officer Jacob Candanoza, 27, was shot on the 1600 block of S. State Highway 34 around 11:00 PM on December 8.

According to a post from the Terrell Police Department, Officer Candanoza had requested backup shortly before the shooting. Within minutes, the Terrell Police Department received multiple 911 calls and a radio transmission from a citizen reporting that an officer had been shot. Emergency responders, including Terrell Fire Department and CareFlite, were dispatched to the scene.

Officers confirmed on the scene that Officer Candanoza had been shot. He was given medical treatment at the scene and then transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Forney, where he later died from his injuries.

Officer Candanoza has been with the Terrell Police Department since July 2024. The department expressed its condolences to his family and the community.

As of 5:30 AM on December 9, the suspect in the shooting has been taken into custody and is being held at the Kaufman County Detention Center. Authorities have not yet released details about the suspect or the circumstances of the shooting.

The Terrell community has shown support by leaving flowers, cards, and messages of sympathy at the Terrell Police Department. Officer Candanoza’s patrol vehicle is parked outside the station for anyone wishing to pay their respects.
