Texas Tech Student-Athletes Record Highest Term, Cumulative GPAs on Record

LUBBOCK, TX – Texas Tech student-athletes achieved new academic milestones this fall, setting records for both cumulative and term GPAs.

Texas Tech Athletics announced Tuesday that its more than 400 student-athletes achieved a 3.39 department term GPA and a 3.40 cumulative GPA, the highest marks ever recorded. The term GPA surpassed the previous record of 3.36, set during the fall of 2023.

“In this day and age, it can be easy to forget about the keyword of educate from our mission statement – ‘To educate, serve and grow Fearless Champions,’” said Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt. “Our student-athletes simply will not let that be the narrative here at Texas Tech. This accomplishment has become a trend we do not take lightly as we continue to reset the academic standard each and every semester. We can’t thank our student-athletes enough for their tireless effort and congratulate them again on another successful semester.”

This marked the 20th consecutive semester that Texas Tech’s student-athletes have achieved at least a 3.0 department term GPA. All 13 athletic programs surpassed the 3.0 threshold, with women’s golf leading the way with a 3.76 term GPA. Other top-performing programs included soccer (3.64), volleyball (3.58), women’s tennis (3.54), men’s tennis (3.49), and softball (3.45).

For softball, the 3.45 term GPA was the program’s highest fall mark, elevating its cumulative GPA to a team-best 3.46. Baseball also posted its highest-ever fall GPA at 3.22. Women’s track and field and women’s golf also achieved record-high cumulative GPAs of 3.45 and 3.72, respectively.

In total, 95 student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA, the most ever for a single term. Additionally, 74% of student-athletes (317 in total) earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher, another record. The President’s List included 62 student-athletes, while 103 earned Dean’s List honors.

“Routinely resetting the academic standard is our expectation for our student-athletes,” said Aaron Tebo, Associate Athletics Director and executive director for academic excellence. “This continues to be their mindset, and these numbers are evidence of that. But that would not be obtainable without the outstanding support from our Texas Tech faculty, coaches and administration, and the incredible work being done by our Marsha Sharp Center team, including our learning specialists, tutor coordinators, and academic advisors daily. It is truly remarkable seeing our student-athletes embrace our expectations and then allow us the opportunity to pour into them, leading them to unprecedented academic success and helping prepare them as Fearless Champions.”

Texas Tech student-athletes receive academic support through the Marsha Sharp Center, which offers private study areas, computer labs, instructional classrooms, and conferencing spaces for tutoring and mentoring. The center provides comprehensive guidance from enrollment to graduation.

Note: For reporting purposes, the sport of track and field was combined into two teams based on gender, including rosters from indoor, outdoor, and cross-country seasons.
