Silent Wings Museum to Host "Connecting with Maps" Program

LUBBOCK, TX — The Silent Wings Museum will host a special program called "Connecting with Maps" on January 18, showing how geography played a role in World War II, especially in glider operations.

From 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, the event will compare Lubbock, Texas, to Paris, France, exploring how these two places were linked to the war in completely different ways. According to a press release, the program will focus on Operation Neptune, the part of the D-Day invasion in Normandy, and how it connects to the geography of Texas and New Mexico.

In addition to the comparison, the program will also offer a guided tour of the museum's temporary exhibit, Unfamiliar Territory: Military Maps and the American Glider Pilot. The exhibit will explore how military maps were used during the war and show how important the American glider pilots were in transporting troops and supplies.

The Unfamiliar Territory: Military Maps and the American Glider Pilot exhibit is now open through April 2025.

The program is included with the price of museum admission, and it's recommended for visitors ages 14 and older. Admission is $10 for general visitors, $8 for senior citizens (60+), $5 for children ages 7-17, $5 for students with a college ID, and free for children 6 and under (when accompanied by a family member), museum members, and active duty military or veterans.
