Texas Tech University System Generates $19.2 Billion Economic Impact in 2024

LUBBOCK, TX — The Texas Tech University System contributed a $19.2 billion economic impact to the state of Texas in 2024, a $2.8 billion increase since 2021, according to a newly released study.

The analysis measured the system’s economic contributions through four primary areas: workforce contributions by alumni, employment, labor income, and overall output. The report also found that for every $1 invested by the Texas Legislature, the state saw a return of nearly $21.

“This data highlights the important role our system and five component universities play in the economies of our state and the communities we serve,” said Chancellor Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D. “It is a testament to our continued commitment to developing workforce-ready graduates, conducting innovative research, and providing critical health care, services, and resources to those who need it most.”

Graduates of the TTU System’s five universities — Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Angelo State University, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, and Midwestern State University — contributed $10.3 billion to the Texas workforce in 2024, a $1 billion increase over 2021.

The system’s total employment impact reached 57,000 jobs, marking an increase of more than 10,000 positions in three years.

The report, commissioned by the Office of the Chancellor and conducted by Dr. Bradley T. Ewing, the C.T. McLaughlin Chair of Free Enterprise at Texas Tech’s Rawls College of Business, used an input-output model to evaluate state and regional economic influence. The study incorporated factors including annual operating budgets, research expenditures, student enrollment, and systemwide spending by employees, students and visitors.

In 2024-25, the TTU System surpassed 64,000 students in total enrollment and exceeded $300 million in research expenditures, both for the first time in its history. The system is one of only nine in the U.S. offering programs in undergraduate, medical, law, nursing, pharmacy, dental and veterinary education.

Established in 1996, the TTU System is a $3 billion enterprise headquartered in Lubbock and includes five universities with 21 academic locations across 17 cities — 15 in Texas and two international. The system serves approximately 64,000 students, employs more than 21,000 people and maintains a $3 billion endowment. It boasts more than 400,000 alumni worldwide.
