LUBBOCK, TX — Texas gas prices have risen to an average of $2.80 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. This marks a two-cent increase from last week and is 38 cents lower than last year.
In major metropolitan areas, El Paso drivers face the highest average at $3.01 per gallon, while those in Tyler and Wichita Falls enjoy the lowest at $2.70. Lubbock sits near the lower end of averages at $2.72 per gallon, about 6 cents more than last week.
Nationally, the average price for regular unleaded is $3.21, two cents higher than last week but 47 cents lower than last year.
According to the Energy Information Administration, gasoline demand reached a record 9.6 million barrels per day last week, likely driven by people purchasing extra fuel ahead of Hurricane Milton. Meanwhile, gasoline supply has dipped to a low for 2024, contributing to rising prices.
“Gas prices increased as demand reached 2024 highs and supply fell,” said Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas spokesperson. He noted that while prices may spike due to hurricanes, they typically decrease within a few weeks.
