DALLAS, TX — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Dr. May Chi Lau, a Dallas physician, for allegedly unlawfully providing gender transition hormone treatments to minors.
The lawsuit, announced on October 17, claims that Dr. Lau administered cross-sex hormones to 21 adolescents, violating Senate Bill 14, which prohibits gender-affirming medical procedures for individuals under 18.
The legal action represents a step in enforcing Texas’s controversial ban on transgender medical care for minors, which took effect in September 2023 and was upheld by the Texas Supreme Court earlier this year.
Under this law, healthcare providers are prohibited from performing surgeries, prescribing puberty blockers, or administering cross-sex hormones intended to declare a minor's gender identity if it is inconsistent with their biological sex.
The lawsuit alleges that Dr. Lau, who specializes in adolescent medicine and is an associate professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, prescribed testosterone to minors from October 2023 to August 2024. The complaint claims she falsified medical records and used misleading diagnoses to obscure the true nature of her treatments.
In a press release, Attorney General Paxton said the state's commitment to protecting children from what he described as "dangerous unscientific medical interventions."
He stated, "Doctors who continue to provide these harmful 'gender transition' drugs and treatments will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law."
If found guilty, Dr. Lau could face substantial penalties, including losing her medical license and fines of up to $10,000 per violation.
This lawsuit will mark the first time an attorney general has targeted an individual doctor under this law.
