WASHINGTON -- Former President Donald Trump secured Texas’ 40 electoral votes in the 2024 presidential election, the Associated Press projected Monday. This victory marks Trump’s third consecutive win in Texas.
The AP called the race for Trump just after 8:10 p.m., as Texas’ updated electoral count increased by two votes since the 2020 census. The state now has the second-highest number of electoral votes in the nation, following California’s 54 votes, according to the AP.
Following the announcement, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott congratulated Trump on X, saying, “Texans have spoken! They want strong, conservative leaders who will prioritize economic growth and securing our border.”
Historically, Republican presidential candidates have consistently won Texas since 1976, with Jimmy Carter being the last Democrat to carry the state.
To win the presidency, candidates need 270 electoral votes. California, Texas, Florida (30 votes), and New York (28 votes) hold the most shares in the Electoral College.
