Freeman F. Martin Named New Director of Texas DPS

AUSTIN, TX — Freeman F. Martin has been appointed the new Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, becoming the department’s 14th director and the first Texas Ranger to hold the position. Currently serving as Senior Deputy Director, Martin will officially take over on December 1.

According to a press release, the Public Safety Commission selected Martin after thoroughly reviewing candidates. The commission unanimously approved his appointment, including Chairman Steven P. Mach and members Nelda L. Blair, Dan Hord III, Larry Long, and Steve Stodghilt.

Governor Greg Abbott praised Martin, saying, “With his experience and commitment to law enforcement, Freeman Martin is the right choice to lead DPS and ensure the safety of Texans.” He also thanked outgoing Director Steven C. McCraw for his 15 years of leadership.

Martin, 56, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead DPS. “I’m honored to be entrusted with this responsibility,” Martin said.

“It’s been a privilege to work alongside so many dedicated individuals, and I look forward to continuing to serve the people of Texas.”
