AUSTIN, TX — Freeman F. Martin was sworn in as the 14th Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety during a ceremony today, December 2, at DPS Headquarters in Austin. Martin, the first Texas Ranger to lead the department, was unanimously selected by the Public Safety Commission last month.
Martin has worked with DPS for over 30 years and previously served as Senior Deputy Director of Homeland Security, overseeing key areas such as counterterrorism, border security, and violent crime prevention.
Governor Greg Abbott, who administered the oath of office, praised Martin’s extensive experience in law enforcement, stating, "Freeman Martin has the experience and the dedication to lead DPS and keep Texas safe. His leadership will ensure that Texas remains a law-and-order state."
Public Safety Commission Chairman Steven P. Mach also expressed confidence in Martin’s leadership. "Colonel Martin knows DPS and its people well. He’s the right person to lead the agency as it faces new challenges," Mach said.
In his remarks, Director Martin emphasized the importance of addressing Texas's public safety and homeland security threats. "It's my job to make Texas safer and make this department better," he said.
During the ceremony, Martin received the official DPS Colonel badge and participated in a flag exchange with outgoing Director Steven McCraw, symbolizing the transition of command.
Freeman F. Martin joined the Texas DPS in 1990 as a Trooper and has held various roles, including Texas Ranger Sergeant and Deputy Director of Homeland Security. Martin is a native of New Deal, Texas, holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, and is a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command.
As Director, Martin leads an agency of over 11,000 personnel responsible for public safety across the state.
