Gov. Abbott Directs DPS to Combat Terrorism After NOLA Attack

AUSTIN, TX —  After the deadly terror attack in New Orleans that left 14 people dead, Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to step up its efforts to fight terrorism in the state.

The attack was carried out by a Houston resident named Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who was reportedly inspired by ISIS. This has pushed the governor to take action to prevent any incidents in Texas.

“Terrorism has no place in Texas,” Governor Abbott said. “We must work together to stop radicalization and prevent attacks.”

According to a press release, Governor Abbott's new plan focuses on both preventing and protecting against terrorism, including:

Prevention Efforts:

  • DPS will increase coordination with the FBI and expand anti-terrorism task forces across Texas.
  • More intelligence analysts will be added to investigate terrorism threats.
  • DPS will work with federal agencies to track migrants who may be on terrorist watch lists.
  • The Bomb-Making Materials Awareness Program (BMAP) will expand, focusing on suspicious material purchases.
  • Law enforcement will partner with mental health experts to prevent violence and terrorism through early intervention.

Protection Measures:

  • DPS will assist local law enforcement in securing events and mass gatherings, offering support with security assessments and personnel.
  • Local authorities will be trained to respond to mass casualty attacks.
  • DPS will work with the private sector to protect critical infrastructure from terrorist threats.
  • There will be a review of security at the Capitol Complex to prevent potential attacks.

Governor Abbott stated that these actions will help keep Texans safe from future terrorist threats. DPS is working closely with local law enforcement to monitor and respond to any dangers in the state.
