HOUSTON, TX—A group of steers caused a brief highway scare on Monday when six roping steers escaped from a trailer, but authorities confirmed that all were safely rounded up by the end of the day.
The steers were being transported back to Bonham, Texas, after the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on March 24. According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the trailer's latch came undone just before noon, allowing 6 of the 31 roping steers to run loose near the Montgomery County line on the I-45 North Freeway.
Reports state that deputies responded quickly, shutting down multiple lanes of traffic as they worked to corral the animals. By 4:30 p.m., Sheriff Ed Gonzales confirmed that all the steers had been secured.
However, when the Kueckelhan family, who leased the steers for the event, returned home, they noticed that one steer was still missing from their herd.
The family is still working to locate the animal, but give credit to the Harris County Sheriff’s Livestock Division for helping round up most of the steers.
