AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety is ramping up patrols this weekend to crack down on distracted driving. From April 7 to April 14, the Texas Highway Patrol will focus on catching drivers who are texting, failing to "Move Over or Slow Down," or are distracted behind the wheel.
“We’ve seen an alarming rise in incidents where our Troopers are being struck while working roadside— often due to distracted driving,” said DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin. “Distracted driving is not just dangerous, it’s deadly. For the safety of all Texans, we urge every driver to stay alert, put the phone down, and give the road your full attention.”
According to a press release, this increase in enforcement is part of Operation CARE (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort) and will run across the country from April 7 to April 14.
During last year’s campaign, DPS issued over 67,000 tickets, including over 4,800 speeding tickets, 303 seat belt violations, 1,630 uninsured driving violations, and 345 felony arrests.
DPS will also focus on the "Move Over or Slow Down" law. This law requires drivers to either switch lanes or slow down when passing emergency vehicles on the side of the road. If drivers do not abide by this rule, they could be fined up to $1,250.
DPS is also reminding drivers to follow these safety tips:
- Put your phone down: Texas law bans texting or using a phone to read or send messages unless your car is stopped.
- Move Over or Slow Down: If you see emergency vehicles on the side of the road, either switch lanes or slow down by 20 mph. If the speed limit is under 25 mph, reduce your speed to 5 mph.
- Don’t drink and drive: Always have a plan for a safe ride home if you’re drinking.
- Buckle up: Make sure everyone in the car is wearing their seatbelt.
- Be cautious: Slow down in bad weather, heavy traffic, or construction zones.
- Drive defensively: Be aware that more people may be on the road, especially during holiday travel.
- Report road hazards: Let law enforcement know if you spot something suspicious or dangerous on the road.
- Check road conditions: Keep up with weather and road closures by visiting Drive Texas.
For roadside assistance, the Texas Roadside Assistance number is 1-800-525-5555. This number can also be found on the back of a Texas Driver’s License.
