LUBBOCK, TX — Gas prices in Texas have increased slightly ahead of Memorial Day weekend, though they remain lower than at the same time last year.
According to the latest AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Texas is $2.79. That’s five cents more than last week but 39 cents less than this time in 2023.
Among major metropolitan areas surveyed, Dallas-Fort Worth drivers pay the highest average of $2.95 per gallon. Waco drivers pay the lowest, with an average of $2.60. Lubbock drivers sit in the lower bracket, with an average of $2.62. Nationally, the average is $3.19 per gallon, unchanged from last week and down 42 cents from last year.
The decrease in year-over-year prices could benefit travelers. AAA projects a record 3.2 million Texans will drive 50 miles or more for the holiday weekend.
“Supply and demand are playing a role in this year’s lower pump prices as crude oil supply is currently surpassing demand,” said Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas spokesperson. “Texas drivers have not seen fuel prices this low for Memorial Day since 2021.”
